The Martin Lel Education Project

Martin Lel SchoolHigh up in the Great Rift Valley, between the towns of Eldoret and Kapsabet, lies a small centre called Kimn'garu. It was here that Martin Lel went to primary school. The area is rich with Kenya's best athletes; Salome Chepchumba, Felix Limo, Robert Cheruiyot all come from this district.

For a long time the local children, after finishing primary schooling (4-years) had the alternative of traveling by foot 12km to the nearest secondary school, or leaving education behind. Many parents chose the latter option, for a number of reasons, especially for young girls.

So in January 2009 we have started the 'Martin Lel Secondary School' and already have 159 students in the first year!

The impact for this area, and to give the children of education, is life defining. To see children so grateful because there is now a school is heart breaking.

There is no electricity at the school, pencils are treasured, and books are scarce - please make a difference and get involved in building this school into being an establishment of excellence. We start slowly, but have great faith that, like the fact it is already up and running, it will happen!
