EDUCATION
To Invest in Education in Africa Changes One Person's World for a year, at the cost of a meal for two in Manhattan.
It is the foundation of any community, the road forward to building a better future. Shoe4Africa has always promoted education.
We sponsor school girls with a clause that the school employs an AIDS AWARENESS day (see our Aids Awareness page).
In 2009, in conjunction with Martin Lel, an ambassador of Shoe4Africa, we have started a secondary school in the Rift Valley. Half a kilometer from Martin's rural home, 5km's from 4-time Boston Champ Robert Cheruiyot's home, but more importantly in an area that had no public secondary school!
Imagine, 85% of Kenyan children can go to primary school, albeit often in classes of 80+ kids, then the statistic drops to 30% for those who can attend secondary (because this is when school fees have to be paid, primary schooling is free...)
But this is for Kenya as a whole, forget the rural region of the Nandi Hills.
"Let's say 20% get the chance, if that..." says Elijah Langat, a teacher in this district.
Education, and educated people, is the foundation necessary to build towards a bright future. Give a student a chance to study in Africa, and the chances are they will be so grateful as it is not a 'given' as education is for so many people in the Western world.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You can help! How? In many ways. Are you traveling to Kenya and can take over school supplies? Do you want to sponsor a school kid? Or what about a class room?
Small money can make a life defining change!
What about going to be a teacher in this area? We can almost promise you it will be the memory you cherish for all time!
The picture to the left shows the headmistress of one Kenyan school hoisting up a computer, one of many, we have given away at our events. In every case it has been the first computer for the school.
