The First Grader X2

On August the 14th it was the anniversary of the passing of Kimani Maruge, a man who inspired a nation with his commitment to education as he enrolled at primary school aged 84. It was a story that ended with Maruge addressing the United Nations. Last year an excellent film, called the First Grader, documented his life (with a few inaccuracies as films sometimes do). It coincided actually with our First Kimani Maruge Memorial event... though our Maruge history began years earlier. This year Kapkenduiya Primary, Patrick Chege Orphans, Livingstone Academy, and Salaba Academy came together for a sports day with the patron Jane Obinchu, the headmistress of Maruge's former school, Kapkenduiya, officiating over the day. For the records Livingstone Academy came out on top with the accumulated points from all the days sports. The school's director, Simon Biwott, is a famous former athlete who won many major city marathons and a silver medal at the world championships int he marathon discipline; it seems his winning attitude is passed on to his pupils.
