Every Race Begins With a Single Step

The concept is the same as our shoe program, I always thought that small contributions can make a large impact. President Obama’s election gave me the further belief that I was right.

As a child I looked at Africa through the media’s eyes; what a mess, too big a problem, what can I do? Obviously my impact could do nothing… but I was completely wrong.

I was born to a family without any special advantages. We did not have much money, in regards to our neighbors and the environment, but we never had too little either. I was lucky, it was a warm embracing family and my parents were indisputable motivators at all times making life interesting, ever-eventful, and challenging.

I left home to make my fortune, for the first time at the age of fifteen, headed for straight for the heart of Europe and got my feet wet. I made a re-run at sixteen, and never returned home. I made my own luck, relied on my instinct and decisions, and had no plot or purpose for a quest in life. I was an irrelevant person without any connections, family favors, or support. It came about, by twirls of fate, that I was living in America, on a permanent resident permit, in my thirties and definitely not keeping up with my peers in terms of property and possessions development; I did not even own a mobile phone, but I was thoroughly enjoying my life.

Once upon a day there came a time when I was asked a simple question... “Can you do this?” And this was to build the LARGEST children’s hospital in Africa. I was hardly the class ‘A’ candidate for this type of question. Since leaving high school, albeit a bit prematurely, I had never even had any health insurance! What did I have for this gargantuan request? Not much money, never had a real job, and no stability; in Europe my friends called me the Blonde Gypsy and basically I had no clear direction to anywhere. Shoot, I had not even owned a single credit card in my entire life.

So here I am, making it happen, but I need your help. Your contribution will make a difference. It won’t be lost, by clicking on the brick below, you are joining me to construct this building. 100% of your donation going directly to the cause.

Thanks, from the deepest depths of my heart,
Toby
